WHAT IS TNR?

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a process that allows community cats to be humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped and released back to their familiar environment. Often kittens and tame cats who are trapped may be placed with rescue organizations for adoption.  TNR is the most humane and effective method to control the overpopulation of community cats.  The best part is, anyone can get involved - you do not need to be part of an organization to learn how to trap cats for TNR.

CAN FCSNP COME TRAP CATS IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD?

No, FCSNP does not perform any trapping ourselves, as we focus on spay/neuter exclusively. However, we do have traps available to rent for an $85 deposit, which we can show you how to use. For additional details, click here and scroll to the bottom.  Additionally, the Community Cat Coalition is an all volunteer organization dedicated to helping community cats, and they regularly host free TNR classes.  Please visit their website HERE for more information on how to help the cats in your community!

HOW DO I TRAP A CAT?

Cats can be trapped using a humane trap. The trap has a door on one end, which can be lifted up and set in place with a small catch. The door is connected to a flat metal trip plate on the bottom of the trap. A small amount of food is placed in the back of the trap, past the trip plate. When the cat walks on the trip plate, it causes the door to shut.

WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE THE CAT MORE COMFORTABLE WHILE IN THE TRAP?

First, start with a clean, sanitized, trap.  This will prevent any lingering smells from stressing the cat you're trapping.  Before trapping the cat, line the bottom of the trap with newspaper and a towel so that the cat is not walking on exposed metal. Partially cover the trap with a blanket or towel so that the cat does not feel exposed to predators or the elements.  Once the cat is trapped, it is important to keep the trap completely covered - this will keep the cat calmer.
